Monsters: are those who intentionally and repeatedly hurt others, physically or emotionally, without remorse. Filling minds with paranoia, creeping into the darkest parts of the human psyche, and playing the lead role in many nightmares, monsters terrorize the happiness and sanity of everyday life. In Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, a well-intentioned scientist creates life, but is horrified by the appearance of his creation, neglects to care for it properly, and ultimately causes it to turn evil. In Oscar Wilde's The Picture of Dorian Gray, a handsome man, influenced by his friends, loses understanding of his identity and morals. Shelley and Wilde create two distinct characters, the Creation and Dorian Gray, neglected to receive proper reception. Every man strives to find himself, to understand himself, but when a person takes a wrong turn on his path to self-realization, harmful effects echo throughout his life. . The vanity of the peasants, who cannot see beyond the horrific appearance of creation, conditions the creation to expect negative responses as a result of its good deeds. After saving a girl from drowning, the creation desperately says: “This was then the reward of my benevolence! . . . as a reward, I now withered under the miserable pain of a wound that had shattered flesh and bone” (Shelley 101). This act of violence against creation marks its turning point. It broke his gentle spirit. Discouraged from its path of kindness, the creation eventually relents and reciprocates the feelings of hatred it receives from the villagers. Therefore, his personality comes to mirror his monstrous appearance. Bond reinforces this idea that the villagers condition the creation to expect negligence as a result of kindness when he states that the creation is "alienated from kindness and communal interactions, and rewards ostracism with violent crime" (Bond). The villagers train the creation to act evilly and consequently transform him into the monstrosity that terrorizes them all. Following a scandalous marriage, Dorian Gray is led astray by human society. After being rejected by human society, the creation “declare[s] eternal war against the species, and more than anything against him who had formed [the creation], and sent [the creation] into this unbearable misery” (Shelley 97). The newfound passion for the revenge of creation dominates his last innocent and pure feelings. Every hate-oriented action committed by creation leads directly back to the unjust villagers and their cruel abandonment. The murders of William, Clerval, and Elizabeth represent creation's spite towards Frankenstein while framing Justine for William's death portrays creation's hatred for even the best of humanity. However, without exposure to the corrupt ways of humans, creation could not possess enough evil to carry out its heinous deeds. Therefore, the corrupt defile creation with vengeance. On the other hand, the corrupt torment Dorian Gray with the loss of remorse. Indulging in the words of Lord Henry, “He becomes indifferent to the effects of his actions which not only destroy others (in ways never specified) but also leave him fatally ruined” (Aubrey).
