E(dward) E(stlin) CummingsEdward Estlin Cummings more commonly known as EE Cummings was born on October 14th. He went to Harvard College and began writing poetry around 1904. Unfortunately he died of a brain hemorrhage on September 3, 1962. However he remains very popular. Influenced by many poets and the situations he found himself in, E.E. Cummings invented his own unique writing style, which is critically acclaimed even today (Anderson). Cummings was influenced by many different things. His father was a school teacher at Harvard and he became one too. Many of his writings derive from personal experiences, for example the imprisonment in France during the war which led him to write the "Huge Room". Which has become very popular and something he is best known for. He also spent time in the ambulance corps, a medical team that helps people who can't go to hospital. When E.E. Cummings married his wife, his work became calmer, more melodramatic, and somewhat erotic. Many different poets influenced Cummings giving him inspiration to create his own writing style. Gertrude Stein, Amy Lowell, Ezra Pound and of course his wife: his wife Elaine influenced him to write very erotic poems, which above all everyone loved. Gertrude Stein influenced him to create images in his writings. She was an artist and sometimes a writer. Many of the images attached to her poems were due to her. Amy Lowell was a free verse writer and also used sonnets most of the time. Cummings also used the sonnet for the structure of his poetry, he is actually known for the English sonnet. An English sonnet is made up of three quatrains and a concluding couplet, it also has a rhyme scheme of ABAB, CDCD, EFEF and GG. Ezra Pound's language is one that infl...... middle of paper ...... is influenced by his style but has yet to sound as great as Cummings'. Personally I think Cummings is a great writer. The way he used different words to mean different thoughts is really cool. I wish I was smart enough to write like EE Cummings. I also think it's terrible that no one really appreciated his poetry until his death; he will never know how much people really think he is. And no one can really ask him how all his ideas came about. All of these are purely opinions, he is not here to challenge any of these ideas. (Arthros). Today Cummings' work is still known and certainly still exceptional. “Cummings wrote at least a dozen poems that seem to me unparalleled. Three are among the greatest love poems of our time or any other time” (Malcolm Cowley). Using the influences brought to him, Cummings used everything to his advantage and became a literary legacy.
