Benefits of Expanding Women's Roles in the Military On the other hand, the need for women to fill combat roles is a benefit to expanding women's roles in the army. The good thing is that both genders can work cohesively because changes have been made in the military. Kidron says women are not equally part of the support group as men. Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Jennie Carignan states that the men under her command respect her, because just like a man, she had to earn her place. Therefore, it is right and fair that women are afforded the same opportunities as men in the military. The debate between the readings was quite balanced. Historically, the social construction of gender, interference with family life, proving they are strong enough for military life, and the issue of responsibility have played an important role in the debate. Fortunately, these arguments pale in comparison to the benefits of having women in the military. Women want to be part of the military, they are not conscripted, women have had opportunities for advancement because they were needed in wartime, they bring new intelligence and peacekeeping, and also, being in the military is right and allows for one's advancement.
