Eighteenth-century British society was divided into social classes and gender roles. Males were considered better at exercising leadership, while women were considered better at caring and managing domestic matters. During this period women were deprived of exercising their rights and held limited roles in society. Women could not vote, own property, and most importantly, were denied the right to receive an education equal to that of men during this time. Women were deprived of the ability to acquire knowledge and exercise reason. Marriage was the primary goal of their life. Not everyone agreed that society underestimated women's abilities. Wollstonecraft, disagreed with how women were perceived and wanted to make a change. she wrote A Vindication of Women's Rights, where she exposed the reasons why women were perceived as objects. She believes parents and schools have contributed to the neglect of education for women. As a result, women were portrayed as weak. Mary Wollstonecraft had very unique views on the role education played in women's lives and strongly argued how disadvantaged they were in society. Wollstonecraft points out that in society, females are viewed as inferior to males. Sbe believes that everyone should be equal, however the way society has been structured has greatly affected the inequality between them. He states that this is the law of nature. He believes that women's minds are not in a healthy state due to lack of knowledge and compares this action to the process that the flower undergoes to grow. He states that “flowers planted in too rich soil, strength and usefulness are sacrificed to beauty; and the ostentatious dismissal...... middle of paper ......m from becoming active in society. In conclusion, Mary Wollstonecraft raised interesting points about education. Lack of education prevents them from achieving a position in society. Women were treated and seen as lower status and she believes that women should be given an education that allows them to develop their own reasons. They can become more useful and valuable members of society. This would prevent women from being characterized as objects and would only be valuable for the looks and qualities men look for in a woman. Women have been “isolated” from the truth and taught to believe they are inferior, which may make it harder for them to listen to and accept its ideas. Women need freedom to be virtuous. If women are not allowed to freely develop their abilities, they will remain weak and continue to be seen as errors of nature.
