Topic > Discrimination and Prejudice in Laong I Sing, by Bao Sing

Prejudice, stereotypes, discrimination, and white privilege are all forms of racism in American society. Bao Phi illustrates this using an example of her feeling of having a different skin color. A quote from his book says, “When the American tongue gets a taste for hot pot, I will open my own restaurant and charge people ten times what the food is worth.” Many people do not find any discrimination in this offer because the price is the same for everyone and does not depend on someone's skin color. For this to be a racist or discriminatory statement, all companies would have to charge different rates based on skin color. In his stories, Bao Phi provides great examples of racism based on different skin colors and corresponding treatment. “I will build garbage dumps in white neighborhoods and make sure there is lead in the water supply. I will tell the cops to stop any white guy they see loitering for suspicious behavior." Anecdotally, this is another example of racism based on skin color, with a twist on what is actually experienced in American society. Many Americans have heard stories of officers following people with certain skin colors other than white even if they are doing nothing wrong This practice serves to further segregate people rather than promote them
