Release youth but write a field report for youth authorities. To release the young person, however, submit a formal report to the juvenile office or a reception unit for possible action. Immediately hand the young person over to the juvenile authorities. Report the case directly to the court through the district or county attorney. Officers may also simply counsel young people, return them to their families, turn to social services for help, or be charged and processed by the juvenile justice system. I think the latitude given to law enforcement in dealing with young people is appropriate. Officers must have the alternatives or discretion to address each case appropriately. This is due to the fact that each case is never the same as another, some minors have criminal records, their attitudes and family situations are different, the seriousness of the crime is different etc. For whatever reason officers must have appropriate discretion to handle the case that is in the best interests of both the child and the
