Have you ever been discriminated against for your own good? Well, I and millions of American adults under the age of 21 have been. There was a bill passed by congress called The National Drinking Age Act of 1984. This mistreated any state that did not prohibit and isolate adults under the age of 21 from purchasing or possessing alcoholic beverages. Despite this, many people believe that it is justified because “the child's brain is very sensitive to alcohol”. In other words, it is right to discriminate against a particular group if it is for its good, rather than discriminating for any reason is wrong. Therefore, it is why the legal drinking age should be 18 rather than 21, as 18 year olds can marry, vote and go to war. Generally, one would think that if it is possible for someone to make a life-altering decision like getting married, that they could at least be allowed to have a sip of wine on their wedding day. In light of “The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated that MLDA (minimum legal drinking age) 21 reduced the number of fatal traffic crashes among 18- to 20-year-olds by 13 percent and has saved…27,052 lives from 1975 to 2008” it is easy to see that the bill saved lives, conversely, it also caused many adult high school students under the age of 21 to binge on alcohol in hidden neighborhoods, resulting in poisoning from alcohol and their death. In addition, many young adults immediately after graduating from high school, thinking that they are with their soul mate, get married and get married.
