Learning to Learn There are four characteristics of Kolb's learning style. They are divergent, convergent, accommodating and assimilative. Divergent people are people whose strength lies in their creative and imaginative ability. They excel in the ability to see concrete situations from many sides and come up with many ideas. Convergents are the opposite of divergents. Convergents use the practical application of ideas. They do best in a situation where there is a correct answer or solution and they can focus on it. Accommodators are good at carrying out plans and experiments. They also involve themselves in new experiences. They love risk and perform well in situations that require quick decisions and adaptations. Assimilators are the opposite of accommodators. They have the ability to understand and create theories. Their learning style excels in inductive reasoning. I think I'm a cross between an easygoing and a divergent. I tend to relate more, though, to the accommodator. I took numerous web tests and achieved high scores in concrete experience (CE) and active experimentation (AE). I also rated it as tactile or kinesthetic in other tests. They both carry notable characteristics that are very common between them and for me. I would definitely have to agree with the tests, because both styles suit me perfectly. There are good points and bad points in my learning characteristics. One time I was urethaning a bar and the customer wanted a thicker finish on the top. Instead of doing research, I applied several thick coats of urethane. It didn't work. Urethane, when applied thickly, does not harden, but remains soft. I had to explain to the customer, show him the correct application, reassemble the entire bar... half the card... the problem. It seems to come naturally to me. This benefits me greatly in all of my life endeavors. Although the above features work very well in my work, as I have proven, there is also a downside. I also match the characteristic that will cause me problems in class unless I correct it. This is the making of long tests or essays. I'm terrible at this, and always have been. The solution to this problem is to apply another learning style to this problem. I plan to apply the visual style next time I encounter this problem. Now that I know exactly what the problem is, I know I can address it and apply the solution. When I continue to correct this flaw, it will have a huge impact on my life and business. There will be no limit to the amount of success I can achieve.
