Where I Work (Case #1) The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) was founded as a place where people could buy or sell stocks. It was started in May 1792 under a plane tree on Wall Street. The expansion of the ideas and dreams of the 24 men is why I have a job today. I would like to share with you the inside of the NYSE from an employee's perspective. At the NYSE there is a division called Securities Industries Automation Corporation (SIAC), I am a leading online operator. I am responsible for monitoring, troubleshooting, and online troubleshooting of the many host systems (other computers) that interact with the New York Stock Exchange. I work in the Exchange and Order Processing section, whose sole purpose is to maintain zero (0) downtime for all equipment on the exchange. By this I mean making sure all computers, printers, portable devices, overhead screens, etc. are all connected to the appropriate ports and are active and functioning properly. In addition to this, the department must keep track of all orders handled through the exchange and verify the integrity of orders as regulated by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The NYSE must also meet the operational requirements of the member company (the companies that trade on the NYSE). My company's organizational culture is established by the rules and regulations of the Securities and Exchange Commission. Due to SEC constraints it is difficult to change the culture. According to the 7 dimensions of organizational culture I would classify my company as such:1. Innovation and risk taking – (grade 1) Due to the restrictions and standards set by the SEC there is little room for this.2. Attention to detail – (rated 5) This is the platform on which the organization is structured.3. Result orientation – (score 5) the organization is “Procedure Driven”, but the wrong result could influence the entire investment community.4. People orientation – (vote 2) Due to the rules and obligations.5. Team orientation – (rated 5) This is a very important dimension of the organization. For a project to be successful it needs the contribution of various resources.6. Aggression – (grade 3) As in most organizations, you need to climb the corporate ladder.7. Stability – (score 5) Due to the ever-increasing demands of numerous customers. As an employee of the New York Stock Exchange for over 13 years, I have observed much of the organization's culture.
