We know it when we feel it, and we usually use the term for positive emotions like joy, gratitude, contentment, and love. It seems like we are always trying to reach the mental state of happiness. The Dalai Lama's definition is “I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the depths of our being we desire fulfillment. In my limited experience I have found that the more we care about the happiness of others, the greater our sense of well-being. Cultivating a close and affectionate feeling for others automatically puts the mind at ease. It helps remove any fears or insecurities we may have and gives us the strength to face any obstacles we encounter. It is the main source of success in life.
