Since the days of slavery black people have fought for their freedom time after time and many different activists have had different ways of expressing themselves to get their point across. But in the mid-1960s Stokely Carmichael had his own way of promoting freedom in the black community. He gave more awareness to the words “Black Power” as he was the leader of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), but he soon changed his approach when he saw nonviolent protesters being brutalized in the South. In 1966, he gave a speech at the University of California in which he addressed the issue of freedom in the black community in which he challenged “the civil rights leadership by rejecting integration and calling on blacks to oust whites from the freedom movement.” Thanks to Stokely Carmichael the black freedom movement intensified and was taken more seriously by whites and other blacks and is also a major reason why blacks have the freedom we have today. Carmichael appealed to the majority of college youth during his lecture. Then he moves on to the topic of white people who should be the ones defending why they oppress and exploit us and not black people defending why they are in this country and defending their position before they enter the world. country… after all it is the white people who took us out of Africa. He says the reason for the oppression blacks faced was due to the color of their skin and no other factors. Then Carmichael refers to Fredrick Douglas when he says that “young people should strive to be leaders today.” This really helps people understand why Stokely Carmichael tries to attract young people and frequents different college campuses, because he really feels that young people can have a big impact on the
