In Thomas Marble's article for University Wire, he cites a study conducted at Baylor University that found that, on average, female college students spend ten hours on their phones per day, males approximately eight hours, and that this excessive use could directly and negatively affect students' academic performance (Marble). Cell phones can be used to do a variety of things, from texting to web browsing to phone calls, but they are used less and less for what their legacy counterparts were used for: talking. Sherry Turkle wrote an article titled "No Need to Call," in which she argues that people are abandoning using the phone to talk (literally) to each other in favor of text-based communications, such as text messages, and -mail, and instant messaging and supports his claims with real-life examples of people he has interviewed.
