Topic > Changing the Culture of the Church - 1678

We live today in a society that is very different from the one in which the previous generation grew up; priorities have changed with people finding entirely new ways to spend their time, people have a barrage of options before every decision, and everyone seems to find someone else to blame for the current situation. 50 years ago this country was experiencing a cultural shift in thinking known as modernity, this was described very well here by Anthony Giddens; “Modernity is a shortened term for modern society, or industrial civilization, it is associated with a certain set of attitudes towards the world, the idea of the world as a world open to transformation, through human intervention”1A great example of this is occurred in 1969 with America sending the first astronaut to the Moon, this was a time when barriers were broken down and it was proven that we really could achieve anything if we put our mind to it. As far as the Church was concerned, this was a difficult time when religion was considered irrelevant, with the newfound freedom of choice people did not see why they should bind themselves to traditional doctrine and instead take charge of their own destiny. This was demonstrated in the free love movement of the 1960s with people rejecting traditional ideas about sexuality and family life and instead choosing to live in the heart and now with what felt good at the time being the most important. Although not in the same time period, a great biblical example of this is shown in Genesis 11 with the story of the Tower of Babel, this shows the people of that time deciding that they do not need a God in the traditional sense and will instead build a tower to the sky so that they can instead make a name for themselves and worship the glory of man. Like...... middle of the paper...... eek among others. They usually refer to a network of people rather than the traditional confessional approach; they can often also be encouraged and funded from places outside the immediate vicinity.
