“The future depends on what we do in the present.” Mohandas Gandhi spent his life teaching those around him about peace and equality. Gandhi saw the suffering of many people and found a way to completely and successfully change it. He did not use any violence and taught others who fought with him how to protest peacefully. Even today he is remembered as the father of India and is highly honored by the entire world. Mohandas Gandhi was a very influential person in the peace movement because he led India's independence movement, proved that one man has the power to conquer an empire and influenced other leaders around the world with his non-violent ways. Perhaps one of the biggest deviants of Mohandas Gandhi's career was leading India's independence movement. Gandhi began his activism as an Indian immigrant in South Africa in 1893, where he experienced his first form of discrimination. The discrimination against him and the difficulties faced by others encouraged him to develop a method of nonviolent struggle for justice based on courage and truth called Satyagraha. Satyagraha promoted the use of civil disobedience and nonviolence as a means to achieve political and social goals. On January 26, 1930, the Indian National Congress, led by Gandhi, publicly announced the Declaration of Independence of India. In 1930, Gandhi began one of his most provocative acts towards the British. It was a direct action campaign of fiscal resistance and nonviolent protest against the British salt monopoly in colonial India, and sparked the larger civil disobedience movement. As he continued this 24-day march to produce salt without paying taxes, increasing numbers of Indians joined him along the way. When he broke the laws of salt,… center of paper… me as inspiration, because he embodies the kind of transformative change that can happen when ordinary people come together to do extraordinary things. That's why his portrait hangs in my Senate office: to remind me that real results won't just come from Washington, they'll come from the people” (Walker). “First they ignore you, then they laugh at you, then they fight you, then you win." It all started with a foreigner who wanted to practice law in South Africa. The journey to the end was difficult for him to achieve, but with fierce determination and a strong mind, Mohandas Gandhi was able to achieve his main goal at that time; peaceful protest which led to India's independence. For many years Gandhi was defeated by the British authorities, but his determination always brought him back to life Many saw him, and still see him, as a leader and father of India.
