All over the world, parents decide to divorce and this leaves children hurt and confused. Children may lose contact with a parent or may decide to make poor decisions in their lives due to feelings of abandonment. Some of the bad choices could be mental health disorders and difficulties in academics. There are impacts on adolescents that might be short-term, but there are also long-term effects, because most of them look to their parents as role models. (decent theme statement) Family clearly has an impact on teenagers, especially in the case of divorce.[Why that last sentence? This is a "no duh" comment = you knew this before you started. Maybe it works as the first sentence, but not the last.]In the book The House on Mango Street, written by Sandra Cisneros, the main character, Esperanza, was influenced by many outside forces, including her family. Esperanza is a young teenager who has just moved to Mango Street, and she doesn't like her house because it's ugly, and she dreams of another house that one day her family will have promised her. “I inherited his name, but I don't want to inherit his seat by the window (Cisneros 11). This was in reference to her great-grandmother who did not want to marry, but Esperanza's great-grandfather kidnapped her and forced her to marry, for which Esperanza's great-grandmother never forgave him and stared out the window for the rest of her life. Esperanza didn't choose her name, her family did, and she didn't even choose who her family is. The external force of family is a problem in real life just as it is in this novel, and teenagers learn to love it or hate it.[Whoa! Where is the divorce here? Why not use mothers who are single parents? Isn't this closer to divorce?] Teens tend to find ways to vent their emotions and try to escape their problems, and this unfortunately leads them to make bad decisions that hurt them more than they imagine. Alcohol is actually a depressant because it slows down the function of the central nervous system and causes people to lose coordination and be unable to think clearly.[Again, whoa! Where is the divorce here? Why start with drinking? Tip: If this is what some teens do when faced with divorce, then maybe this should be your 2nd or 3rd comment, not the first.
