I chose to write about chapter three because of my fascination with the period of slavery in our country; the reasons why it happened, why it happened and some of the missing story behind that period. As for the missing story, I've always been fascinated by the underlying story that made slavery possible in America. The third chapter delves into the topic that has intrigued me since high school, specifically how the slave trade came to be, how it was started, and those who actually started and ran it. It was very interesting that the concept of the indentured servant was actually introduced coming from Europe. Indentured servitude is itself a form of slavery, even if the individual would eventually achieve a "free" status. I've never quite understood the fact that people can basically "sell" themselves into one type of slavery, but denounce other forms of it. Interestingly, this self-pronounced slavery is still practiced today regarding debt and the amount owed to others. What is really interesting is what led to the decline of the indentured servant movement. The reasons, as stated in the book, being “less related to domestic overcrowding and rumors of mistreatment of indentured servants” (Binder & Reimers, 2008, p. 42), show that some Europeans had also opened their eyes to partial slavery. Therefore, it became one of the most important causes of the transition from indentured servitude to slavery. Greed was also a major reason why the change occurred. This “greed” forced those who owned the largest farms and plantations to seek a different endless supply of cheap labor. But despite the cost of labor, it was also about the ability to control the people who worked for the owner. There is no doubt that the gen...... middle of the paper ......ps on others to further their own personal gain.Dr. Falconbridge explains very well that the slave ship crews did not "care" for the slaves, but mostly only intended to keep them alive to save their investments. It also seems to me that the owners of the ships only intended to minimize losses for the benefit of their profits, instead of treating individuals with the slightest human dignity. I have no doubt that those enslaved individuals understood what awaited them in the New World and could not dare endure the hardships that awaited them. This selection of texts really opened my eyes to the scope of slavery as a whole, slave trade, and the main incentive for such – greed. Works CitedBinder, F. M. & Reimers, D. M. (2008).
