'I am the heart and soul of this organization, its founder, philosopher, spokesperson, original programmer, organizer, financier and everything in between. If you have a problem with me, get pissed off' (Julian Assange, 2010, cited in Poulsen & Zetter, 2010)IntroductionIn his article, The Mediatisation of Society Theory, Hjarvard (2008) deduces that the media simultaneously becomes an integrated part of society, for not to mention the existence of new media such as the Internet. Indeed, this integration of the Internet into our daily lives has made us live in the digital age where information is shared in real time and in a global context. Castells (2007) even argues that in this digital age, people are able to expand their local communication activities to interactive global communication at their chosen time. Consequently, this new realm of communication has conceptualized the world's people into a networked society. In other words, the globe is now “a global village” through a single click (McLuhan, 1962, cited in Berger, 2007). One of the recent phenomenal, yet controversial, entities of the Internet is WikiLeaks. Since its first introduction, this website has gained international attention. By publishing a huge number of classified documents regarding several notable public figures and governments, Wikileaks is also claimed to generate a major impact on related countries such as Africa, the United States, Western Europe and Indonesia. Robert Gates (2010, cited in Pilger, 2010, p. 1), the US Secretary of Defense, even states that the website “has blood on its hands”. Likewise, the ongoing controversy surrounding Wikileaks also reflects the role of the individual in the online public sphere.
