MelancholiaMelancholia is a feeling of sadness and depression and what better way to capture it than with the end of the world. Von Trier did a great job describing how the world would end. In this movie the way the world would end is that the planet Melancholia would end up hitting Earth. John, Claire's husband, always reassures her that Melancholia will never hit the ground. Most of the time you start watching movies to take your mind off the worldly things but this takes you so far into the real world that it starts to make the viewer feel depressed. The feeling of depression is so great in this film that it brings a great sense of unease. If I were a director, this would be something I would strive for, to make the audience uncomfortable. The movie is a little confusing, but in the end it made sense to me, but not entirely. For starters, this film has beautiful cinematography. I really like the opening scene of the film where the scenes are arranged in super slow motion. The cinematography of these opening scenes is what kept me watching the film for as long as I did. Sometimes I didn't understand why while watching the film, but most of the scenes that appeared at the beginning of the film appeared sporadically throughout the film. The soundtrack at the beginning of the film really depressed you during the opening scenes in slow motion. Throughout the movie, whenever there was a breakdown or a moment of worry, that song would come and play. That song eventually lost its power for me because it was so frequently used. The sound was fantastic in my opinion, not only regarding the soundtrack, but also the normal everyday sounds. It made you feel like you were… middle of paper… features of this movie. It was a great film for art film viewers and not for the everyday audience who would go to see a film in the cinema. The style of this film is based solely on one character and runs throughout the film. The way this film came to me may not be the same to anyone else. This was a love-hate movie for me. I really enjoyed many parts, however I thought much of it was too long. It's also definitely experimental that something like this could never happen, because if a planet ever came close to Earth, something would most likely have happened to us before it literally crashed into us. I like this perception, though, because it gives us an idea of what could be and also opens our eyes to what people really go through and suffer on a day to day basis...
