Music has influenced society throughout history. Music has been around since the beginning of time. The influence of music on modern society can easily be seen today. Music has been proven to have many influences on humans in positive and negative ways. Music has been shown to alter a person's mood and cause physical responses in many people at once. The mind is able to concentrate better, as the body becomes more relaxed and alert. Technology has greatly influenced the effect of music on the brain and the way society views, absorbs and creates music. Scientists have proven that humans have responded to music since birth. Elena Mannes, a neuroscientist, has recorded the relationship with music throughout the life of a human being. Mannes even went so far as to say that the cries of babies as young as a few weeks old were found to have certain intervals common to Western music. He also states that scientists believe music stimulates more parts of the brain than any other human function. With this knowledge, he sees that music has great potential when it comes to influencing the brain and its functioning. One major area of the brain: Music can have a real effect on neurological deficits (Mannes INT). For example, if a patient who has just had a stroke has lost verbal functions, those functions can be stimulated by music. This is known as melodic intonation therapy and could help patients regain speech. The human brain is divided into two parts, the left and right hemisphere. The right hemisphere is traditionally thought to be the “seat of musical appreciation.” However, the right side has not been tested in any way for that role (Joelving INT). One important thing to understand is how the brain breathes... in the middle of the paper... that's how strong the power of music exists and will become in the future. There have been many studies that have proven this. For example, one study shows that students who study music in high school get better grades than those who don't. The reason for this is that listening to music makes you think more efficiently and improves your memory. Society has relied so much on music that without music life would change as we know it today. Every culture created throughout history has some form of music, demonstrating that music is fundamental to life. Even though people think of music only as entertainment, it actually goes much deeper than that. Music is now being used as a therapy that is radicalizing the way people think about sound. People can lower blood pressure, find happiness through depression, and recover through major surgery, all thanks to the power of music.
