Davis says teaching is about relationships; relationships between concepts, relationships between students and relationships between student and teacher. Like any relationship, it requires an investment to be successful. When I was in fifth grade, my school was going through a strange transition that could affect students' preparation for middle school. Mrs. Davis explained that at the time, my teachers had invested a lot of time and tough love into preparing us for the rigor of middle school. She explained that “teaching is a bond that never disappears” and that “teachers have a direct influence on how children see adults for the rest of their lives.” I absolutely agree with this statement; the educators I interacted with throughout my K-12 education shaped my view of education, educators, and adults in general. I had the pleasure of having great teachers who encouraged me to be my best, built my self-confidence, and taught me academic concepts and ultimately life skills. That is to say, Mrs. Davis left a mark on my life that I will never forget. More than anything, she cared and that has been enough to push me towards academic success thus far and I am so grateful to be able to tell her the positive effect she has had on my life.
