Today's healthcare environment is challenging for nurses at a time when there is a critical shortage of staff to meet the many needs of patients. Ethical problems can arise in any healthcare situation where profound moral questions about patient rights exist. Nurses around the world have long struggled with ethical challenges in patient care, but it has become difficult for nurses in all parts of the world to operate with integrity despite the moral choices and pressures nurses face. According to one article, no or low stress is reported in demographic data, associated with the staffing model that creates the most ethical stress. About 80% felt confident they could justify their ethical decision, and nearly two-thirds felt prepared to address ethical questions. About 44% of nurses are frustrated and about 57.5% are overwhelmed. Nurses constantly face these ethical issues every day of the year. One of the reasons this happens is the lack of staff in the facilities. In those facilities that have insufficient staff it is difficult to meet the ethical standards of professional practice.
