As a viewer who does not own a gun and who is also quite unaware of gun control laws, I was all about what Michael Moore had to say in his documentary Bowling for Columbine. In this documentary, Moore raises awareness of the growing need for stricter gun control laws. Why does Moore believe America needs stronger gun control laws? It's because Moore believes that everything around Americans should scare them; America is run by a culture of fear. While Moore's message is important, Moore's failure to connect his various subtopics, and his use of questionable evidence, ultimately destroys the audience's understanding and leaves them confused. Throughout his documentary, Moore, uses many subtopics to try to convey his message that America is run by the culture of fear. These include school shootings, the causes of gun violence, the culture of fear that lives in America, the lack of good welfare programs, how he believes the NRA was insensitive by holding pro-gun conventions right after the shootings in schools and how Americans segregation and stereotypes against blacks, Hispanics and Latinos and lack of gun violence in Canada. All of these subtopics individually are effective in showing the reasons for the culture of fear in America, but together the subtopics create a random mix of ideas with no clear connection. I was very confused. I had no idea what Michael Moore's true purpose was. Maybe because the Columbine shooting was horrible and he was trying to raise awareness of the event? Or was he trying to say that Americans segregate people too much? I wasn't the only one confused. In the article "Bowling for Columbine: Film Asks Provocative questions about US Cul... amidst a newspaper ...... from Canada's National Post stating that "'Almost all of the Toronto murders were committed with guns. .. [and] over the last 115 years, the proportion of all gun homicides committed with firearms has almost doubled in Canada, from just over 1/3 to almost 2/3'”. Of course, Moore tries to hide the fact that Canada is actually very similar to America, which is run by the culture of fear. Moore's documentary should inform people of the growing violence in America and that America needs stricter gun control laws. . While Moore has many interesting topics to share in the documentary, I found myself lost in the collection of themes and unable to find the purpose. Moore's inability to connect subtopics together, and his use of obviously biased evidence, ultimately destroy his ethics and distort the true purpose of the documentary..
