Topic > Women and Women: A Woman of Color - 978

These four journal entries were chosen because they share a common theme in women's studies. Each writer expresses the oppression women face, whether in childhood, as a housewife, or as a woman of color. The selected magazines were about “What it would be like if women won”, “Feel Me. Look at me. Listen to me. Reach Me,” “Deadlier than the Male” and “The Problem That Has No Name.” Each magazine reflects the differences in how men and women have been treated and are still treated within society. Being a woman of color as Gay, an African American, or a Native American tribe, people place limitations through prejudice. They are even more discriminated against because they are not considered equal to Caucasian women. In general, girls are taught to aspire to be housewives, through their toys and play. Once a woman becomes a housewife she is seen as submissive to her husband and denies her vocation. Society is structured to keep women oppressed and these four diaries are proof of this throughout women's history. In Gloria Steinem's journal entry "What It Would Be Like If Women Won," girls are taught gender roles through the act of play. The idea of girls playing with toys that mimic household chores perpetuates benevolent sexism. Throughout the semester, we discussed the nature of women and how they were seen as physically incapable of excelling academically. How can women thrive as scholars and succeed in the workplace if they are taught at a young age to play with a toy vacuum cleaner? While boys have freedom to develop their creativity, girls use their mothering skills while playing with their dolls. Society sets these high standards of a woman's image. She teaches this to...middle of the paper...implying that she didn't deserve her accomplishments and only achieved that level of success because of her race. From a feminist perspective, it is disheartening that a woman would promote smears against another woman. In a society that marginalizes women, one woman should not do the same thing to another. It only makes Gay's journey to success that much more difficult. However, this is not an unusual story as people of color, especially women, are seen as symbols. They attend that school or career only because the institution needed to fill the racial quota. As a woman of color, I am not unaware of this notion. For most of my life I attended schools where I was a racial minority. You must demonstrate your competence as a woman in education and as a person of color. As a woman in our society, I have to work hard to abolish stereotypes associated with gender.
