Brady WootenMay 5, 2014Mrs. LangermanEnglish III 3A Genocide: Why We Shouldn't Intervene During World War II, Hitler wanted to get rid of the Jews and committed genocide, killing more than six million people. This is a tragedy and the world would be a better place if people didn't do this. Genocide is a horrific event and many innocent lives may be lost. However, the United States should not intervene in a genocide in foreign countries, because it could harm both countries involved, we do not have the authority to intervene, and perhaps we may not be wanted there. One reason why the United States should not intervene in genocide that occurs in other countries is because both countries can be harmed in many different ways, both physically and even economically. In dozens of Washington Post interviews with the Iraqi people, their attitude toward U.S. intervention is not what one would have thought. They stated that “their lives were safer and more prosperous under Saddam Hussein and that the US invasion was not worth the price paid by either country (Sullivan 2).” If this is the case, why should we interfere where we are not needed or wanted? Which is a waste of much of US money for no reason and perhaps human lives. A New York Times article also said “. . . The worst thing in Darfur would be an Iraqi-style intervention. This would almost certainly spread the civil war to other parts of Sudan.” If this is correct, then why would the United States intervene with something that would do more harm than good and endanger more lives than already exist? The United States should not intervene because we could ultimately harm both countries. Another reason why the United States should not intervene is that we do not have the authority or the right... on paper... of the possible harm. of both countries, we have no right to do so and may not be wanted there. Above all, this is a horrible event in our world's society; however, that doesn't mean we have to step in and put some of our employees in harm's way.
