Topic > Harrington makes the world aware of the unknown society...

In Michael Harrington's The Other America, Harrington argues that the world only knows part of America because no one, including the government, cares about the poor, the government the poor are separated and invisible to everyone else. There are two types of Americans, poor America and rest of America. The underclass of America is the invisible people of America, who need the government's help. They need everyone to see them, to stop being isolated from the rest of America and finally get noticed by the government. Harrington writes "The poor still live in the shabby homes of the central area, but are increasingly isolated from contact with others, or from sight." , than anyone else." Harrington's choice of words leads the reader to believe that the conditions in which the poor live and work are of a lower standard than the rest of America. While this may be true, words such as "miserable housing and increasingly isolated” almost exaggerate the conditions. These words are used to create further sympathy for the poor. Harrington adds more to his point later in the document, commenting on the change in the housing of these poor people. He writes: “The total impact of the various housing programs in South America postwar was to squeeze more people into existing slums.” The conditions in which these Americans live are worsening, but the government is to blame the poor. But with the programs they have provided they are only making their lives more difficult. The poor of America are becoming their own society with a different population. The rest of America doesn't want to join in... middle of the paper... and to give them a chance. Harrington talks about the lower classes and the things they own. The lower class ultimately has and owns less than the rest of America. Yet America believes it can continue to take what little the poor have. Even after all this, their own society has no voice. They are unable to make changes, for everyone or even for themselves, because the rest of America won't let them. Within this document, Harrington raises shocking points. Like the society of the poor is huge but they can't do anything because for the rest of the world they don't exist. The lower classes are unable to help themselves because of how little the government is giving them and also how much they are taking away from them. Harrington is trying to raise awareness in the rest of the world about the poor American population. He's trying to get them to see it.
