By defining value, Nozick introduces intrinsic value which states that other types of value exist based on their relationship (Nozick, pg 162). Additionally, in defining value, there are a couple of different specific characteristics, such as organic unity, which means “unity in diversity.” Nozick defines meaning by stating that meaning cannot be achieved with something that is completely worthless (Nozick, pg 167). By having habitual value and meaning in my life, I can see my growth and development as well as having a special value for health, family and friendship. I could make drastic changes to my life to make it more meaningful and have much better value. While having better value and a meaningful life, this shows how much happier I can be in my life. Nozick states that when something has intrinsic value, its organic unity is its value (Nozick, page 164). There can be many different specific characteristics in describing value, but the one that really does is organic unity, this shows an important dimension that controls most of the value. Furthermore, according to Nozick, “…a resulting organic unity depends on two things, the degree of diversity and the degree of unity to which that diversity is brought” (p. 164). That said, the more diverse the varieties of diversity, the more difficult it is to bring about unity. Furthermore, to have special value in our lives and in the activities we cherish, we desire the highest degree of organic unity. Describing this, Nozick states, “We want to understand a variety of traits and phenomena… in the middle of the paper… myself to get a better outcome. Now, knowing that to succeed and achieve happiness, you will have to face some obstacles and sometimes even fail. However, it's not about failing, it's about how you bounce back to see if you can succeed again or come back stronger. Having this resource, this teaches me the value and meaning of life. In conclusion, Nozick defines value with organic unity and then states that meaning is the grand scheme of things. The arguments and explanations Nozick interprets that show the definition of meaning and value actually make a lot of sense due to the analogies used and the understandable way he writes it. All in all, by having a valuable and meaningful life, one will achieve true happiness. Quote Nozick, Robert. The Examined Life: Philosophical Meditations. New York: Simon and Schuster, 1989.
