Have you ever seen physical disabilities before? In fact, physical disabilities are not uncommon in Hong Kong, not even in the world. Among these disabilities, people with paraplegia are the target group I wanted to find out how physical fitness can help them improve their quality of life. Since they have to be confined to a wheelchair every day, they may face many challenges in daily life, such as climbing the ramp, getting into vehicles, going to the bathroom, etc. Good physical shape is required to overcome challenges. While some paraplegics may have someone who cares for them, such as family, friends and caregivers, they may not need to find a way to deal with challenges immediately. However, they own their life, no one can take care of them for life. Therefore, self-care is an important task for them. Paraplegia, which is caused by damage to the spinal cord due to trauma or disease that results in a temporary or permanent loss of motor, sensory and autonomic functions resulting in complete paralysis or partial paralysis of the lower half of the body. Physical fitness is a health-related physical activity, which includes five parts, namely muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility, cardiovascular fitness and body composition. Muscle strength is the maximum force produced by the muscle. Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscle to perform a certain movement without fatigue. Flexibility includes range of motion, the ability of soft tissues to stretch, and the availability of joint motion. Cardiovascular fitness is the ability of the cardiovascular system to perform a certain activity or gas exchange. Body composition is the relative percentage of lean mass and adipose tissue. There are several advantages...... middle of paper...... weight in a sitting position, trunk rotation, joint mobilization of the upper limbs and muscle strengthening. There are some precautions for paraplegics when doing exercises. First, avoid exercising alone. Your partner can help you when you need help. Also, wear comfortable clothes to move freely during the exercise. Also, exercise in an open area and clear all obstacles to prevent accidents from occurring. Also, do warm-up and cool-down exercises before and after exercises respectively to prevent sports injuries. However, drink plenty of water after exercises to avoid dehydration. In conclusion, people suffering from paraplegia are not the end of life. If they are in good physical shape, they can still push the wheelchair to go everywhere, play sports, volunteer and face challenges in activities of daily living. They will still have a meaningful life.
