Some kids were sitting on a bench smoking cigarettes. I didn't understand why in America it is forbidden to smoke in schoolyards, especially when it is a young high school student doing it. I was amazed at how relaxed everything seemed. No one was in a hurry to get to class and it felt more like a social gathering than kids going to school. The weather was as warm as ever, so everyone was outside. I remember walking past people and feeling too scared to even look them in the eye. At the time I only spoke a little Hebrew, so the thought of someone trying to ask me something was a nightmare I didn't want to live through. I continued to look around and noticed that there was a stand where you could buy some pastries. I was extremely excited because I had never eaten something like this before in my schools, and the pastries in Israel were more than amazing.
