Topic > Rationalization of Society by Max Weber - 743

We live in a fast-paced world where everything revolves around how much money you make and how much you can spend to earn more. There are pros and cons like the one I mentioned for the self-checkout line. In a restaurant where you have to get drinks, the benefit to the business is less manpower needed to serve the customer. As a consumer, I like to get drinks because I like to mix sodas together in my mix with what we used to call "suicide." Although I'm not really sure where the name came from. I don't think Weber liked this process very much. In our textbook it is stated that for Weber the process of modernization brings with it a naked and sterile world culture. (Allen 153) I feel like he is describing a very sad and lonely world. In conclusion, I believe that Weber was very accurate in describing future societies as very rationalized. George Ritzer's The McDonaldization of Society (2004) explains this theory in modern terms. In Weber's original work he speaks of the "disenchantment of the world". Are we happier now with less enchantment? I do not believe. I believe that a little more mystery and a little more contact with people would make a person much happier and less lonely
