Founded as a republic, the United States would be a nation in which its citizens would have abundant freedoms, including the freedom to receive up-to-date and reliable state-provided information to help them in turn make better decisions about their families, city and country. Thomas Jefferson, the third American president and father of the American Constitution, stated that “an informed citizenry is the only true repository of the public will”. For Jefferson's wishes to be realized, revolutionary ideas and technological advances would be needed, as occurred with the importation of the printing press, the creation of the postal service, and the invention of the electric telegraph. What emerged after the introduction of these technologies were profound social changes and, as Marshall McLuhan stated in 1964, the medium became the message. This statement by Marshall McLuhan concludes that the characteristics of information technologies (medium) influence society and not the content provided by these technologies. They. Any medium that accelerates or introduces social change is the message, regardless of the content it emits. Looking back to the introduction, the inventions of the printing press, postal service, and telegraph helped spur information processing and communication that led to intense social changes, including the solidification of America. Social interaction revolves around communication. Therefore the way you communicate determines the way you socialize. Technologies such as the printing press, the postal service, and the telegraph altered the way people communicate and therefore the way people interact socially. These mediums are the message. One of the most famous inventors, Johann Gutenberg, helped create paper......these innovations were mediums that became the message. They brought about profound social changes and were instrumental in building America. Printing enabled the widespread dispersal of literature of all kinds, from the Bible to pamphlets promoting more democratic forms of government. The spread of information ultimately explained the rise in literacy rates that would follow later. The postal service allowed for the transmission of newspapers through the mail, improved mail transportation, and allowed people to connect with other people efficiently. The electric telegraph allowed for instant communication by linking together not only people in the United States, but also individuals from all over the world. All of these technologies have enabled social interaction to occur at new levels, from the smallest communities to an entire nation.
