I recently went to a Kmart store and was amazed at the level of their quality management. Kmart was one of the first major discount store chains and has grown over the last half century to become one of the largest retail chains. Unfortunately, when I walked into a Kmart store, I was disappointed with the quality of the stores: the floors were dirty, the merchandise was missing or mismatched, and the style of the shelves seemed old compared to those at Target – Walmart. Quality management is usually classified as when an organization strives for quality control, planning and improvement. Most quality management improvement techniques such as Lean and Six Sigma both require continuous improvement techniques, methods and standards. This paper does not aim to discuss the conventional mythology of quality management (tools), but instead focuses on the unconventional methods that CEOs and managers have used to ensure or solve quality management problems within a company, through a top-down management approach. which processes, products, services and relationships are free from defects and items that do not add value to the customer” (Chris P.2). Using Quality Defection The Journal of Management and Market Research suggests that the company can implement quality management initiatives such as Six Sigma (Chris P.2). However, the magazine highlights that to ensure business success, various management models such as strategic management, the 5P model and the national Malcolm Baldrige quality award criteria need to be implemented and adapted within the organisation. The founders set a path for tools like Lean, Six Sigma, and management models that help businesses today. In this article I have discussed some management styles of Sam Walton and Jeff Bezos to ensure quality within their companies. While both the founders and CEOs had and do not have an exact name for their quality management techniques; I have demonstrated that their methods are rooted in the basics of management techniques. Sam Walton and Jeff Bezos realize that to ensure their business improves, they need to have an acceptable level of quality. When you consider the profits of Walmart and Amazon over the years, it is a testament to the standard of quality that both companies respect and pursue..
