You are normally born into your faction, but when you turn sixteen you take a test to see which faction you best belong to. The five factions are Abnegation, Amity, Candor, Dauntless, and Erudite. Abnegation are usually selfless and caring, Amity are peaceful, Candid are honest, Dauntless are courageous, and Erudite are intelligent. Each faction is different from the next and they are designed so that people can be with other people who have the same characteristics as them. The protagonist, Beatrice “Tris” Prior, is a teenager in Abnegation.
