1. INTRODUCTIONThe project proposal for the Campus International School for Downtown Cleveland illustrates Cleveland State University's master plan transformation to convert the area into a dense mixed-use development with recreational fields. The quote “an opportunity to reevaluate the broader terrain in which children learn and give learning environments the same emphasis that others have given to educational philosophies” formed the basis of our proposal. A key aim of the project is to produce a safe learning environment for students. The flexible classroom design and street layout of the school encourage groups of children of different ages to meet and learn together, while the main circulation space between the classrooms, student meals, media center and breakout spaces provides an additional learning center. The proposed layout avoids hidden corners and blind spots, and careful thought has been given to the landscaping to provide different types of outdoor play space, including areas for learning, planting, quiet zones and games. Each classroom has direct access to the outdoor playgrounds and views of the surrounding buildings. The basis of the project focuses on four educational groups: learning, growth, recreation and social interaction. We believe these are the foundations of the school's new vision, allowing for a complex program where students can interact with each other and with the city of Cleveland. Instead of opting for a linear and continuous distribution of these four clusters, the project's design proposes a combined and more playful combination of spaces through the use of curves and organic shapes. ACCESSIBILITYThe facades of the building move away from the boundaries of the site, allowing open spaces that define the different entrances to the school. A student bus drop-off zone has been designated at the edge of East 18th Street, making it the only vehicular access for students, parents, staff and visitors. At the edge of the site along Superior Avenue is an open space for the GCRTA #2 bus stop. 3. This site boundary will also be accessed by car and therefore adjacent parking along Superior Avenue is taken into account. An adjacent new roadway off East 21st Street will provide service access to the school kitchen, warehouse and building amenities. Controlled access to this road will be provided. Access from Payne Avenue will be primarily pedestrian and students will need to interact with the university campus located to the south of the site.
