This theme has been shown throughout the story and is not easily apparent at first. Throughout the story, Jonas mentions age rankings and the special traits of each. Every year the children in the community get a new feature such as a bicycle to show freedom or a jacket with a button front to show independence and this helps them realize that every year you gain individuality and become unique. Even the job selection that occurs when a citizen turns twelve demonstrates that each person has individual traits and individual abilities that others may not possess. The author also inserts a subtle hint to this theme in the section where the twins are born. The twins look identical but one less than the other and this reinforces the theme. He subtly states that individuality is not only external but also internal. Also, when Jonas finally started seeing the color red, he noticed that Fiona had a touch of red hair but doesn't mention anyone else's hair color. This shows that she was unique in that special way and that being unique and individual stands out. If Jonas had not been unique in his attributes he would not have been chosen as the memory receiver, which goes to show that being individual and unique can help you stand out and perhaps even get ahead in life. Also, as Jonas starts to feel more and more emotions, the author does a good job showing that without emotions we are basically all the same, but the different emotions we feel shape who we are as a person and are an important part of our life.
