Topic > Advanced Age: The Importance of Old Age - 1068

Saul Mcleod wrote an article on Erick Erikson's developmental stages and wrote that in the final stage people face what is called "integrity of 'ego vs. Despair” which in return translates into wisdom. He states that “As we age (65+ years) and become elderly, we tend to slow down our productivity and explore retirement life. It is during this period that we contemplate our achievements and are able to develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life. Parisi Jeanine examined Ericson's final stage and composed a broad definition of wisdom that includes "wisdom involves the pursuit of difficult or complex problems, the application of prior knowledge, and the making of valid and executable judgments, often towards the goal of achieving a common good". Both Saul Mcleod and Parisi Jeanine charge that the sense of wisdom is not something that is obtained in the early stages of life but rather in the last stage of life, in our old age. This is an important point because it shows that wisdom is something that only comes with old age, which in return brings the younger generations to respect
