Unlike war machines, soldiers have feelings, and the feelings they carry have their own mass. In the story, the author states that the objects that soldiers carry with them during the Vietnam War are “immaterial,” yet these intangible objects have their own tangible mass. The author later adds that welders carry with them the “greatest fear of blushing” and their “reputation”. (O'Brien 348) Each of the soldiers is afraid of being cowardly and would rather die at the bare hands of the enemy than die in dishonor. Yet, in this way, he motivates the soldiers to continue fighting until the end, so that they will not easily give up fighting on the battlefield precisely because they fear being called “cowards”. Furthermore, soldiers not only bring armed conflict with them, they also bring feelings of love.
