The progressives I chose to interview are the PAWS organization. PAWS is an organization that protects free-roaming animals in Kuwait. The most common animals rescued in Kuwait are dogs and cats. Their rescues were not easy, physically and mentally. Many of their rescues involved brutal torture of animals or rescuing dogs from dog fights. In one of the rescues a dog was tied to a post and burned alive; the kids who did it were just doing it for fun. After the rescue, the president explained to me that they had suffered a nervous breakdown and could not return to their shelter for 6 months. The problem that emerged from that situation was that the general Kuwaiti public needed to be educated about animal rights because what is happening would be considered genocide if it were done against humans. The president said, “There is no education, no awareness, so someone has to make that move, someone has to try to do it and fortunately we did,” Rola Al-Baker, president of PAWS.
