It pays off in terms of self-esteem and self-acceptance. No one knows how much they really have until they are called to give of themselves. By taking stock of themselves, a generous person will realize greater self-esteem, which translates to the added benefit of greater self-acceptance. To achieve more, we must value more and accept more. Generosity pays because the more we are capable of giving, the more we are capable of receiving. As Jesus said, the measure we give is the same measure we receive. If we give with a full glass, we will be able to receive with a full glass. Remember what the Psalmist understood: my cup overflows. The cup of our giving is the cup of our acceptance; and it is always overflowing. There is always more to give and more to receive, but the measuring cup determines how much we are able to give and receive. Even if there is more available, we can only give and receive what we think we are worth: the measure of our self-worth. Generosity is an exercise in realizing there is more. It brings about the realization that you have more to give and that there is more where that came from. Generosity is like a good investment: it is appreciated, and it is appreciated
