Today scholars study history and can analyze the importance of change from the past. During that time, however, it was common for people to think that life would never change (lesson, 9/14/15). This means that even small actions can pose a large threat to a new colony like Massachusetts Bay. So while Anne may not have taken the biggest actions, she was a leader of change. She defied the expectations that Puritan leaders had for women of the time, and her role in society was so different from the norm that leaders saw her as a potential threat. For this reason, the court felt justified in putting her on trial, which would have led to her excommunication
