The current leader of Ethiopia, Mulatu Teshome Wirtu, elected president since October 7, 2013. The current government of Ethiopia is the federal republic and parliamentary republic, and their national language is the Amharic language. The masked dictator Meles Zenawi, the former leader of Ethiopia, was a very confused man of mixed heritage. To the rest of the world, Zenawi seemed like a peaceful leader who was pushing Ethiopia towards economic progress and as a country. He was a man of many faces who had done many good things and many bad things. The evil has been hidden by extreme repression and total control of external information and the population's personal expression. Power, money and total control were the game and the Ethiopian people were being fooled. The threat of physical force and death loomed over the Ethiopian people if they dared to step forward for justice and equality. Zenawi, who died in 2012, was the dictator of Ethiopia and ruled his country by jailing and killing thousands of people, rigging elections and spreading government propaganda. The Ethiopian government controlled everything, whether it was jailing journalists, exiling critics, or abusing human rights. “Zenawi's critics have been jailed, killed or driven out of the country: in fact, more journalists have been exiled from Ethiopia in the last ten years than any other country in the world. Let's reiterate: Zenawi has expelled more journalists than any other tyrant on the planet, thus monopolizing control over information” (Halvorssen, par. 6). Ethiopia seemed like a peaceful and progressive place only because people abroad were protected from the truth. “Keeping Ethiopia united” cost the dictator dearly, Meles Zenawi agreed to take it. It was very ignorant for Bil......half of the card......which might be violated in the process. He created dissonance among a people who before his rule had “a long-standing unity and nationalism that made Ethiopia unique” (Dula, pars. 4). While working with the United States to capture terrorists, many thought he was trying to bring justice to his country and around the world, but many people didn't know that in return his government received about a billion dollars a year in aid Americans. He gave a rosy picture of his country's growth and success and captivated Western leaders with his Zenawi who would have anyone killed or exiled who he thought was threatening his reputation or position in office. The death of Meles Zenawi should not be devastating for the Ethiopian people, in fact it could be a sigh of relief. Yet many are likely holding their breath about replacement should the legacy of his extremism continue.
