Intermediate essay “The First Day”What ideas does the author develop about how an important event can change your perspective? In the story "The First Day" by Edward P. Jones talks about a little girl's perspective on people during her first day. Her mother had packed her an unusual breakfast and some clothes for her new school, Seaton Elementary, along New Jersey Avenue. A key event happens to her at the Walker-Jones school. He learns an essential fact about his mother's previous past in his life and how she behaves. The daughter sees that the mother doesn't seem to like the teacher in her daughter's new class. A significant event can change the way you saw people from your old understanding to a completely different understanding of how you saw them before. She had a normal day for her first day of school, she was given usually unhealthy oatmeal with brown sugar with also brand new clothes. His mother believed that his first appearances at school would be important. They lived on 1227 New Jersey Avenue, where Seaton Elementary is located, across the street from where they live. Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, its mother church is right across the street from the school. Her daughter's mother always told her that she would attend primary school across the street from her church even when she was not yet born. A woman at the entrance said "wrong school, we should be at Walker-Jones". The mother said she wants her to attend this school and asks for a reason why she cannot attend. She sees that her mother only wants her to appear in elementary school. Mt. Carmel Baptist is the mother church and she would feel separated from her connection with God if she did not have her attend school. She stared and looked at the teacher twice, which would show that the mother doesn't like something about her. “Her lips are trembling,” the daughter said showing that her mother was trembling as she spoke to her. The mother's shoes as she walked down the hall away from her daughter and the teacher made a very loud sound. Singing and talking in class as they walked to the room was not yet strong enough to carry away his mother's shoes as he walked down the hall. Here the mother shows emotions that she does not approve of towards the teacher as in his actions and takes loud steps down the corridor.
