Health promotion is important in the prevention of diseases and negative health behaviors among the mass public. It costs the NHS much more to cure or treat disease than to promote a healthier lifestyle. Health promotion is “the process of enabling people to increase control over and improve their health” (Ottawa HP Charter). In the 1950s the World Health Organization worked to raise awareness and inform people about their health. The construction of public health policy is linked to decisions made at all levels of government and to the work of other organizations that aim to improve health. The Healthy Child Healthy Weight campaign is aimed at preventing unhealthy weight in children, which will lead to obesity now or in adulthood and later life (Scottish Government, 2011). The campaign works closely with schools, seeing them as a key organization in helping to combat childhood obesity. The campaign takes into consideration the "Map of the path to a healthy weight" of Scottish politics, which also places great attention on the fight against childhood obesity, on which to base its interventions. It also reflects the 'Getting It Right For Every Child' approach, placing the child and their family at the heart of interventions and providing support so that children can get the best start in life (Scottish Government, 2012). The awareness that families, parents and children need to be involved will have a great impact on the success of the campaign; as these are the people who make decisions regarding their children's eating habits and create good eating behavior. In Scotland over one million adults and over 150,000 children are obese. In conclusion, the "Healthy weight for healthy children" campaign can be very effective in reducing overweight and obesity in children. Obesity is a major problem in today's society, the level of occurrence of which is increasing, meaning increasing costs to the NHS to treat its consequences. Intervention in childhood will be helpful in starting the process of behavior change early where habits have not been instilled over a long period of time. Working with families will help your child achieve a healthy weight, as they can provide healthy meals and encourage physical activity. The cost of the campaign is an issue to ensure the campaign continues, further funding needs to be raised to deliver more interventions in local areas.
