Nowadays, Common Core Standards seem to be a hot topic of discussion across the country. People everywhere have heard these three words and have their own opinions about the effectiveness of this initiative that is impacting students, teachers, administrators and communities across the United States. The Common Core is a newly developed set of learning standards that details what students in grades K-12 nationwide should know in math and English language arts by the end of each school year. Although these learning standards aim to provide clear and consistent educational standards, their implementation has met with great resistance. Many of those who oppose these new standards are not necessarily opposed to the standards, but to their dissemination and implementation because of the negative effect they are having on students. The Common Core is a new curriculum adopted by states across the country. The Common Core was started as part of the American Diploma Project in 2009. “Its financial support originally included donations from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in partnership with NGA. States that have adopted the Common Core Standards would be eligible for this financial support.” (Scholastic.com). The Common Core standards are an education initiative in the United States that details what K-12 students should have learned in English language arts and mathematics at the end of each school year. “State education leaders and governors in 48 states collaborated to develop the Common Core, a set of clear college and career standards for kindergarten through 12th grade in English language arts/literacy and mathematics ”. (Common Core, FAQ). The initiative is sponsored by the Nation...... middle of paper......and, the clock will show 9:15 and the question asks to draw what time it will be 55 minutes later. They draw the large hand and small hand on the clock face to indicate 10:10. Another method is that the question will read a time and the children will have to draw the time on the clock face. The question will be 10:00 and the children will have to draw where the clock hands will be on the clock face. Another method to read the time is that there will be a set time on the clock face and they will have to write what the time reads. The clock will show 12:30 on the dial and they will have to write 12:30. To help them solve problems they are given a small plastic analogue clock with moving hands. Many students felt frustrated and struggled with this concept. I have found that the common core standards for math are much more difficult for children this age.
