Minimum wage always seems to be a topic of discussion. The most current debate is for Ohio to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. In some parts of Ohio there is even discussion of raising it even further, to $15 an hour. There are many pro/con debates circulating on this particular topic. There is a lot of research going on to determine whether or not this would benefit employees or harm them. The dispute is ongoing nationwide, but Ohio is among the few states debating such a dramatic increase. There are many good reasons why the minimum wage should be raised to at least $10.10 if not more. An increase in the minimum wage would be beneficial to the economy. Many argue that the more money you earn, the more money you will spend. This concept also applies to families and brings greater benefits to the economy depending on the minimum number of dependents in that family. According to Sarah Shemkus, “…a recent study by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago concluded that, following a minimum wage increase, spending by households with at least one minimum wage worker increased by $700 per quarter.” If the minimum wage were to increase, there would be more money moving through the economic system. Second, raising the minimum wage would benefit people in several ways. If the minimum wage were increased, the number of job opportunities would increase. Since people would earn more money, they would spend it more often in companies. This would mean that these companies would need more employees to handle the business they were receiving. Employees would be more likely to be satisfied with their jobs, due to the salary they would earn. If the minimum wage increased slightly each year... half the paper... d. Along with these dilemmas, competition for all positions will intensify, which could make getting a job extremely difficult. Another topic that contains a big hole is that of equality. The two points they make in support of this argument are that raising the minimum will create equality between different classes and that it will end up being a raise for all Americans because everyone's salary will increase in a domino effect. These points do not agree at all. If everyone benefits, then the gap between different wages in the classes will remain there. If it manages to reduce the gap, it will not be able to guarantee equal benefits for everyone. The argument for raising the minimum wage is not valid at all and everything can be contradicted. The cons definitely outweigh the pros for this topic, at least for now.
