But every single person in the market was against him and stood by while he suffered. Similarly, Shirley Jackson demonstrates man against man by recounting how the villagers ultimately stoned Tess. The village turned against her as soon as she “won” the lottery. “Delacroix chose a stone so large that he had to pick it up with both hands…” (Jackson).
