In 2009, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called the Holocaust a "lie and a mythological claim" on NPR news (Whitelaw). The hype about Muslims denying the Holocaust has existed for many years, and many people believe that Ahmadinejad made this statement out of fear that the Holocaust would legitimize the Israeli claim. But just last week, on the same day that Ahmadinejad again addressed the United Nations General Assembly on this topic, a Moroccan university student named Elmedhi Boudra organized a conference dedicated to commemorating the Holocaust. The New York Times article “Signature Mission for Muslim Conference: Remembering the Holocaust” highlights how special this unknown and unreported conference of the Mimouna Club truly is. Much of the fear and denial of the Holocaust in the Arab world is refer to the feelings present during the witch hunts in The Crucible, and the Mimouna Club is comparable to those few brave souls who remained sane during the trials.
