Chapter Five Discussion and Conclusion Introduction The purpose of this research was to explore the extent to which the use of educational games can improve students' understanding of the structure and concept of mechanics. According to Yolageldili and Arikan (2011), “games have become considerably important for English language learners and teachers, not only because they provide fun and relaxation, but also because they encourage learners to use the language creatively and communicatively”. Literature has revealed that games motivate students to become learners as students will naturally want to play them, as a result there will be an increase in their memory as students often remember fun activities. According to Irvin (2007) there is a connection between motivation, commitment and success. Irvin (2007) points out that motivating students is important, but engaging them is critical, because “the level of engagement over time is the vehicle through which classroom instruction influences student achievement.” This chapter seeks to outline the summary of the research process, conclusions, discussion and recommendations based on the findings documented in chapter four. Summary Teachers have been tasked with imparting knowledge in a way that stimulates students' interest and willingness to learn. Moore (2009) states that language arts has been a major issue for students around the world, particularly in areas where learning English is their second language. Based on past experiences during third grade diagnostic testing, students were observed to have lower achievement in language arts, especially in the areas of reading comprehension, vocabulary, and structure/mechanics. After constantly marking these sheets... in the middle of the sheet... whoever uses them, may not use them to their full potential. In conclusion, engaging in qualitative research is indeed a challenging task. This research pushed me to be more organized and focused in documenting and analyzing data. However, it is a useful experience to see how the use of games can improve students' understanding, performance, interest, and attitude toward the content area. I am fully aware that not all students function at the same level and also vary in styles and abilities, however the use of educational games is one way educators can accommodate different intelligences. It is also important to note that the findings gathered from this research should be shared with school administrators, the Ministry of Education, curriculum developers and other educators who wish to use this strategy in their practice..
