One of the best-known incidents – and the bloodiest – occurred in 1960, when police opened fire on 7,000 protesters, killing nearly 70. It was because of this action horrible that Mandela and other ANC leaders decided to create an armed part of their organization, just like other revolutionary movements against colonialism in Africa. (“Nelson Mandela and the fight against apartheid”). On this change from the organization's original policies, Mandela said: “It would be wrong and unrealistic for African leaders to continue preaching peace and nonviolence at a time when the government has responded to our peaceful demands with force. It was only when everything else had failed, when all channels of peaceful protest were closed to us, that the decision was made to undertake violent forms of political struggle." (“Nelson Mandela”). This is one of the contrasts that can be made between Mandela and Martin Luther King. King refused to participate in violent protests and insisted on peaceful ones instead. In contrast, Mandela, after seeing the government react with violence, chose to react with violence himself. (Jason
