Managers who create a team atmosphere will reap the benefits of a helpful and satisfied staff who will step up to help in any way they can to continue it. Many times staff required additional work days or changed their schedules to accommodate changing surgeries and an influx of new patients. This kept both floors of our unit open during low census periods and prevented the downsizing of our staff. Second, the trending downward utilization of two operating rooms located in our unit posed the challenge of integrating pre- and post-operative nurses into the continuity and flow of regular room nursing shifts. The management and the nurses concerned collaborated and adjusted their working hours, which benefited not only them but also their colleagues. This change has also reduced the need for most to change shifts or take extra days. Our leader is always present, involved in daily activities, and supports and supports her staff when allegations of incomplete nursing care are made.
