In 2009, an organization of doctors known as The American Academy of Environmental Medicine (AAEM), conducted animal research on genetically modified foods. They stated: “There are serious health risks associated with consuming genetically modified foods. Such risks include: infertility, immune system problems, accelerated aging, disruption of insulin and cholesterol regulation, gastrointestinal problems, and changes in the liver, spleen and gastrointestinal tract… there is more than a casual association with genetically engineered foods modified and adverse health effects. There is causality” (Smith 12). The findings surprised many and more studies have been conducted showing even more health problems including kidney damage, breast tumors and premature death in rats. The result of a European study conducted on laboratory animals has created many questions on the topic. In this study rats “that were fed a popular GM corn developed horribly oversized tumors and organ damage. This study has been widely criticized. But so do industry studies that show GMOs are safe” (Smith). There are no long-term studies conducted on humans demonstrating the safety of GMO foods for humans to cause class controversy.
